Every dog is unique and deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and understood. Tellington TTouch® offers a gentle, relationship-based approach that looks beyond behaviour, helping you better understand your dog while supporting their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Many people first explore Tellington TTouch® because everyday life with their dog has become difficult. Walks may feel stressful; your dog may react to other dogs or people; car journeys may be upsetting; or fireworks and thunderstorms may leave them frightened and unable to settle.
Others come to strengthen trust, improve communication, and find a kinder way to support their dog at each stage of life.
Tellington TTouch® can benefit puppies, adolescent dogs, rescue dogs, active dogs, older dogs, and dogs recovering from stress, change, illness, or injury. It is not only for dogs with obvious problems; it is a way to listen and understand your dog’s responses, and help them feel more at ease in their body and in the world.
The Link Between Posture and Behaviour
When a dog pulls, barks, lunges, freezes, hides, trembles, jumps up, or struggles to settle, it can be tempting to focus only on stopping the behaviour. But behaviour is communication.
There is always a reason for behaviour, even when that reason is not immediately obvious.
A dog who pulls on the lead may be excited, worried, physically unbalanced, or unable to slow themselves down. A dog who reacts to other dogs may be overwhelmed or trying to create distance. A dog who finds touch difficult may be tense, sore, anxious, or unsure what is going to happen next.
Tellington TTouch® helps us pause and ask: what might my dog be experiencing, and how can I help today?
“Change the Posture; Change the Behaviour.”
Tellington TTouch® recognises the link between posture and behaviour, and the way physical, mental, and emotional balance, or imbalance, are interconnected. As we help a dog improve their posture, balance, and body awareness, we may see the behaviours that concern us become less frequent or less intense.
When a dog is physically balanced, they often feel safer. When they feel safer, they can become more self-confident in their environment and better able to understand and respond to what we are asking. Greater self-confidence can support greater self-control, to support them to self-regulate.

Tellington TTouch® Groundwork: The Playground for Higher Learning
Tellington TTouch® Groundwork, known as the Playground for Higher Learning, is an awareness course for both dogs and the people working with them. Dogs move slowly and mindfully through simple groundwork exercises designed to encourage focus, balance, coordination and body awareness.
Moving in slow, non-habitual ways asks the nervous system to pay closer attention. The groundwork can make learning enjoyable, help dogs experience success and build confidence while developing greater physical, mental and emotional balance.
Help With Lead Pulling and Stressful Walks
Many people look for support because walks have become stressful. A dog who pulls strongly on the lead may be rushing because they are excited, worried, overstimulated, uncomfortable, or struggling to organise their body.
Tellington TTouch® may also use specially designed equipment, including the TTouch Harmony Harness, Harmony Lead and Handle, and TTouch Connector. The Harmony Lead and Handle, and the Connector both create two points of contact, one at the front and one on the back of the dog. This supports the dog’s balance and allows clearer, gentler communication through the lead.
Tellington TTouch® leading techniques and groundwork exercises can help dogs slow down, improve balance, support loose-lead walking and stay more connected with their guardian. This can make walks feel calmer, safer, and more enjoyable for both dog and person.
Support for Dogs Who React or Feel Worried
Reactivity can be distressing, and living with a reactive dog can be difficult for both dog and guardian. Your dog may bark, lunge, growl, spin, freeze, or become unable to respond when they see another dog, person, vehicle, or moving object.
“Aggression comes from a place of fear and is a cry for help.” – Linda Tellington-Jones
This encourages us to look beneath the behaviour and consider what the dog may be trying to communicate.
Tellington TTouch® looks at what is happening beneath the reaction. Is the dog tense? Are they overwhelmed? Can the situation be made easier so they have a chance to succeed? With gentle support, some dogs become more able to pause, move away, or reconnect with their person.
Supporting a dog to feel safer and more balanced can help them remain in a thinking state, giving them a greater opportunity to respond rather than react.
For dogs with significant fear, aggression, pain, or sudden changes in behaviour, Tellington TTouch® should sit alongside veterinary advice and qualified behaviour support.
Help With Traffic, Fireworks, Thunder and Loud Noises
Traffic, fireworks, thunderstorms, gunshots, bird scarers, and sudden bangs can leave some dogs shaking, panting, hiding, barking, pacing, or unable to rest. For many guardians, this is heartbreaking to watch.
Noise sensitivity can affect dogs in different ways, and some may remain worried or unsettled long after the sound has stopped.
Tellington TTouch® can offer gentle, practical ways to support dogs who are sensitive to sound. Bodywork, wraps, quiet observation, and small changes in how we respond may help some dogs feel more grounded and less alone during frightening moments.
Rather than trying to take away a dog’s sensitivity, Tellington TTouch® looks for ways to help them feel safer in the presence of loud and unfamiliar sounds.
Help With Car Travel and Journeys
Some dogs find car travel difficult. They may feel anxious about car travel and may pant, whine, bark, drool, shake, pace, refuse to get in, or become overexcited before the journey begins.
Tellington TTouch® can help break travel into smaller, more manageable steps. A practitioner may look at how your dog approaches the car, gets in and out, settles before the engine starts, and recovers afterwards. For dogs who may be travel-sick or physically uncomfortable, veterinary advice is important, too.
Help With Grooming, Handling and Vet Visits
Some dogs find touch or handling difficult. They may move away, tense up, mouth, growl, hide, or shut down when being groomed, having their paws handled, wearing equipment, or visiting the vet.
Tellington TTouch® helps guardians slow down and notice the dog’s feedback. The goal is not simply to make the dog tolerate handling, but to build trust, communication, and confidence so that necessary care becomes more manageable.
Support Through Every Stage of Life
Tellington TTouch® can support dogs at many different stages of life. Puppies can benefit from gentle handling, confidence-building, and body awareness. Rescue dogs may need time, choice, and trust as they settle. Adolescent dogs often need support with focus and self-control. Older dogs may benefit from gentle comfort, relaxation, and mobility support.
For all dogs, Tellington TTouch® encourages us to meet the individual in front of us in that moment.
A Kinder Way to Support Your Dog
Tellington TTouch® is not about fixing your dog. It is about listening more carefully, offering support, and building trust through the way you interact.
When we work with softness, awareness, and respect, behaviour becomes information. Small changes become meaningful. The relationship becomes part of the work.
At its heart, Tellington TTouch® is a way of being with your dog: listening more closely, noticing subtle changes, and working with the whole dog rather than focusing only on behaviour.
